Mills Ends Contract With Metro Animal Control

Effective June 30, 2018, the Town of Mills is ending their contract with the City of Casper & Metro Animal Control to provide animal control services to the Mills area.  The Town of Mills has established a new Community Services Division housed under the Mills Police Department.  Community Services Officers will be responsible for both code enforcement and animal control services, as well as other duties that do not require a sworn officer.

The new division is more cost effective for the Town of Mills and will also allow for two full-time code enforcement patrol officers within the Town’s boundaries.  Animal licensing will be streamlined and more time will be allotted for handling local control issues.  The Town of Mills will contract with the Humane Society for shelter and adoption services, as well as local vets for medical needs.

“This update provides better services to our residents and is more cost effective for the Town of Mills”, said Seth Coleman, Mayor of the Town of Mills.  “We’ve appreciated Metro’s services in the past.  As we move forward, we need to continue to identify and leverage opportunities that work best for our community and residents”.

The Town of Mills Community Service Division is expected to be fully operating by July 1, 2018.  Once this Division is functioning, Mills residents can reach code enforcement or animal control services 24 hours a day through the Mills Police Department at (307)266-4796.  During business hours, 7 a.m. – 6 p.m., animals can be dropped off at the Mills Police Department at 4800 W. Yellowstone Hwy. in Mills.  Alternatively, a community service officer will be available any time of the day to pick up animals.

The Town of Mills spent extensive time researching and comparing potential scenarios including the above description of the new Community Services Division, bringing all services in house and staying with Metro.  The identified approach will be the most manageable and cost effective for the Town.

Both existing and new community services officers have received extensive training on code enforcement and animal training.

The Governing Body has passed new Animal Control Codes on the first reading and would appreciate the publics input this month as these codes are considered twice more.  The draft is available on the Town’s website.
